Efforts in deregulating and market planning

Kuan said he expressed to the U.S. government and Congress that trade between the two countries is not limited to the controversies over U.S. pork and beef imports, but extends to cooperation across a number of industries.

He said he spelled out Taiwan's efforts in deregulating and market planning.

The U.S. acknowledged Taiwan's determination to take part in the TPP and was positive about the Taiwan's progress in liberalization, encouraging Taiwan to continue its reforms, Kuan said.

During his visit, Kuan gave a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank, in which he emphasized the mutually beneficial aspects of Taiwan's bid to join the TPP.

Stefan Selig, U.S. under secretary of commerce for international trade, noted during a meeting that as Taiwan ranks 16th in the World Banks' Doing Business report, the U.S. is open to exchanges and cooperation toward bringing regulations in line with international standards, Kuan said.
