The ports of Puget Sound allow substantial amounts of trade along with Asia. The geography of Washington State ranges from mountains to rain forests to semi-arid desert. A lot of the latter region is under agricultural cultivation.
The state produces lots of agricultural products and is a leading producer of hops, red raspberries, wrinkled seed peas, apples, spearmint oil, sweet cherries, pears, peppermint oil, Concord grapes, Niagara grapes and carrots for processing. Other essential agricultural products include lentils, fall potatoes, dry edible peas, apricots, sweet corn green peas for processing and asparagus. Of particular significance is the apple trade. The state of Washington has led the nation in apple production since the 1920s because of the warm, dry summers and cold winters of the central region, that comprises the Yakima region and the Wenatchee-Okanagan region.
In the year 2007, the total gross state product of Washington State was $311.5 billion. It ranks as the 14th leading state economy within the country. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer makes its home in Washington State. Different important businesses include automotive, computer software development, electronics, telecom, aluminum production, biotechnology, wood and lumber products, mining, beverages, real estate, retail and tourism. Major companies based or operating there are Paccar, Starbucks, Microsoft, Bungie, Amazon.com, Nintendo of America, Nordstrom, Valve Corporation,T-Mobile USA and Weyerhaeuser. The state of Washington is likewise a producer of hydroelectric power.
